Dairy Innovation West (DIW) Update – August 16, 2024

Dear Dairy Producer,

Your DIW team has been hard at work to make progress on the project and share its future benefits and impacts.

DIW Website Launch
We are thrilled to announce that Dairy Innovation West (DIW) will be launching a dedicated website to serve as a comprehensive resource for stakeholders, industry partners and dairy producers! The DIW team has been working diligently behind the scenes to create an engaging, user-friendly and informative online experience.

Stay tuned for the official launch of the website in September and join us in celebrating this exciting milestone. Your continued support and engagement are invaluable as we work together to advance the dairy industry in Western Canada.

Construction Progress

  • Construction activity onsite has been focused on ground floor excavation for underground plumbing and drains, as well as electrical conduit throughout process areas.
  • The tanker bay scale and office concrete pour took place in July, which also allowed framing for walls and readiness for drywall installation to be completed.
  • In July, external civil works completed installation of the water line, including hydrants, and installation of the main gas line and sanitary lines, as well as the external lighting undergrounds and pedestals.
  • In early August, the west alcove and services area were due for slab pours, and completion of roof systems is expected in late August following the lift of Air Handling Units for the ventilation system into the mezzanine and the roof extension being covered.
  • Slab pours are set to occur in late August and into September.
  • Pacific Process continues close coordination with the building contractor to maintain groundwork schedule for under floor drains moving to pouring of floor slabs continuing as the primary focus.

About Dairy Innovation West
Dairy Innovation West (DIW) is a milk concentration facility under construction in Lacombe County, AB. First of its kind in Canada, the $75 million facility is owned by the Dairy Industry Development Council, Alberta Milk, SaskMilk, and Dairy Farmers of Manitoba. The facility has two key strategic objectives: to support processing expansion in Western Canada and to reduce the western Canadian dairy industry’s environmental footprint and transportation costs through the concentration of liquid raw milk.  This state-of-the-art facility will have the capacity to accommodate up to 300 million litres of milk per year and is set to open Spring 2025.
